Amber, a Timeless Treasure

A gemstone with time trapped inside! Dating back millions of years, amber is a type of fossilized tree resin found in the Baltic region of Europe on the seabed of the Baltic Sea, however, this is not where it is believed to originate. Amber originally formed during the Eocene period (0.2 million to 50 million years ago). During this period the continent looked very different, there was no Baltic Sea which is only 12,000 years old! Far to the north in the territory of modern-day Scandinavia, there were large forests with huge trees that were shedding resin for reasons unknown, this is where amber comes from. Over time, a number of rivers transported the resin farther south, to where Poland is today and to where the largest amber deposits in the world are found, the Baltic region!

The liquid resin was runny enough that it would not crush the things it encountered, but rather captured the organic matter allowing us to admire the inclusions retained in their original shapes and forms. Typical inclusions are air bubbles, pollen, leaves, insects, spider webs and other organic debris. These inclusions make each piece unique and one of a kind. Natural amber does range in color from yellow to brown, but the most popular color is the rich, orangey cognac!

Fun Fact: If our pieces seem fit for royalty, it is because they are! In 2017, the President of the City of Gdansk commissioned our vendor to create unique jewelry pieces for Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!
